Jean 'Moebius' Giraud 1938-2012

Recently read John Eaves blog and found out about the passing of another favorite artist of mine, Jean Giraud aka Moebius. I always loved his line work and most importantly his use of color. I was first introduced to his work when i was a kid, I saw some of his art in an issue of Starlog that covered his work on 'The Abyss' and 'Willow'. Then also when scrounging around my dad's comic collection, I found an early issue of Heavy Metal that had a story by (and signed by) Richard Corben featuring Den and also a story by Moebius with an explorer and a nude nymph guiding him until they are shot to death at the end by a more advanced group of people. I have always loved Moebius' work and his use of color. Godspeed fellow artist, many artists have been inspired you, as long as others remember, you will never be forgotten.

Latest work, the art of '13'

Here's the latest work I have done over the past few months. If most of it looks like it's from Battlestar Galactica, you're correct. I am attached to a fan-film production called '13' right now and I am the main illustrator on the production. The cool thing is that we have people who have worked on the 2003 reboot of the show on the staff. It been interesting working on this production because I have had the opportunity to work directly with the producer to get the look he wants for each of the craft. It's not like school at all, naturally. Instead of having an instructor who could care less about the work I do, I work with the opposite who is actually excited to see the work I have done and luckily can't wait to see more of it.

New Work! (again...)

It's been way too long again, this last semester has been a doozy. I was able to work in the Kinesiology department and create artwork again and also pursue some other ideas I had brewing. But most importantly I have one semester left and then I graduate!! I am simply posting all the work that I created this semester, that I am proud of, some good, some okay. I took ceramics and found out I can sculpt, really well. I did a Creature from the Black Lagoon bust, the best I could do, then later on I made a Nude Torso sculpture in clay. For Illustration I went and did concept design for Micheal Crichton's novel 'Prey', one of my favorite books. I designed architecture and hardware for the project, the main antagonist, the Nanobots and created about 25 pages of storyboards, a mere selection can be viewed here. In painting I created three pieces for the entire semester, I did a Superman painting in acrylic for my final project, the other paintings I'll post later on. but for now enjoy and let summer begin!

A simple twist.

I recently got Syd Mead's Sentury II for Christmas. Fantastic book, although different than Sentury from 9 years ago. I thought I would experiment with one of my line drawings and color them as Syd Mead does. It took a little fiddling around, but I believe I have come close to the technique that he uses. I won't share how it's done because it something else I can put in my bag of tricks, but here you go and enjoy! And besides, if you are gonna steal something, steal from the best.

First digital painting ever!

I have been working on this off and on for the past few weeks, it's due on this coming Wednesday for my Thunderbird MK.1 project I have been doing in my Illustration class with Bill Carmen. This is still a work in progress though, i have to add a few details and also a vapor trail to suggest movement for the aircraft. But all in all it is my first digital painting, so everyone, please be gentle, especially you Bill! I think now I am ready to make that jump to digital, I need to keep experimenting so I can improve, but I think this is a great start.

For next semester I intend to work exclusively in digital and pen and marker for my work, just like this semester, but I cannot spill the details on what I intend to do, I want to keep that a secret for now.
